Cisco IOS (Internetwork Operating System) and NX-OS are the operating systems powering Cisco's routers and data center switches respectively. IOS runs on enterprise routers and campus switches, while NX-OS is optimized for high-performance data center switching with features like virtual device contexts and fabric path. 

Both platforms generate detailed syslog messages covering interface state changes, routing protocol events, authentication activities, ACL violations, configuration changes, and system health alerts. These logs provide critical visibility into network infrastructure operations and security, enabling detection of unauthorized access, routing anomalies, and infrastructure changes.
