When installing a remote Update Manager from the Windows Installer (MSI), the installation fails with the following error message:

Error 25007. The Windows API call ControlService failed. The error returned was: 14001.

Known to apply to the following Sophos products and versions
Sophos Endpoint Security and Control remote Update Manager

Technical background

This issue may be caused by using the MSI rather than setup.exe. This is because the setup.exe installation file contains some pre-requisite files for installation which are not accessible via the MSI. These include the Windows Installer 3.1 and Visual C++ 2005 SP1 runtime files.

What to do

  1. On the computer on which you installed Enterprise Console, go to the shared folder SUMInstall.
  2. Double-click Setup.exe to run the installer.

A wizard guides you through the installation. It will allow you to install the pre-requisite files along with the Update Manager on the computer that will host the remote Update Manager.
