Error 1704 - An installation for is currently suspended

The following error is seen:

Error 1704. An installation for <Sophos Product> is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?

Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+

The Windows installer service has not properly terminated the install process resulting in a suspended installation for the specified package.

What to do

Clear any in-progress installations as described below:

NOTE: The following requires editing of the registry. Before you continue, refer to our article on how to back up the registry here.

  1. Launch Windows Registry Editor
    Start | Run | Regedit
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Inprogress.
  3. If the Inprogres exists, then delete it. 
  4. Retry installation 

If the same problem occurs delete the above key again, then reboot the machine before attempting the install.


Unregister and then re-register the Windows Installer Service.

On Windows XP, 2003,
Choose Start > Run.
Type msiexec /unreg and click OK.
Type msiexec /regserver and click OK.
Retry installation.

On Windows Vista and above
Choose Start, type msiexec /unreg in the Search field and press Enter.
Type msiexec /regserver in the Search field and press Enter.
Retry installation.
