Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: installation error 1402

When you install Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+, you see the following error:

Error 1402:
Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring\Sophos Anti-Virus. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Windows XP Professional
Windows Vista SP1

Technical Information
On a default install of Vista or XP Professional with 'normal' permissions on the keys indicated, Administrators should have 'Full control', as described in the knowledgebase article 26404.

Generally this issue seems to happen if a registry key could not be opened during installation.

What to do

Before you do any of the following, read the Warnings about editing the registry and make a back up of the registry.

Windows XP

  1. Check the Event logs or MSI installation log for more information. You will see something similar to this:

    Productname - Error 1402 - Could not open registry key : [Keyname] - Systemerror 5...(e.g. UNKNOWN\CLSID\{D2B7A809-40B4-A1E1-C61EA97191DB}\LocalServer32. Systemerror 5.)

  2. Open the registry and go to the key mentioned in the error. Change the faulty permissions on this key and trigger an update/reinstall Sophos Anti-Virus.

Windows Vista

  1. You must enable the Administrator account to change/add registry permissions. To do this, from a command prompt enter the following:

    net user administrator (this is a password of your choice, make sure it's strong)
    net user administrator /active:yes

  2. Log in as Administrator and make the registry permission changes.
