Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows XP+: cannot create a new or scheduled scan locally

Issue
When you try to set up a new or scheduled scan on a local computer, you receive an error:

Error : The password is incorrect, please try again.

Sophos product and version

Operating system
Windows Server 2003,
Windows 2000/XP

What to do

Work through the following steps:

  • Check the account on the local computer. Ensure the account does not have a blank password.
  • Create a new local account to test.
  • Check the Task Scheduler service, this must be enabled and will give the same error if disabled.
