When logging on to a Mac you see the following warning:

You don't have permission to use the application "SophosUIServer."

The user account logging on has Parental Controls enabled and the 'Limit Applications' option selected. Example:

What To Do

Log in to the computer as an administrator and allow the background Sophos processes to run from the 'Parental Controls' section of 'System Preferences'.

  1. Log into the computer with an administrator account.
  2. Open 'System Preferences'.
  3. Open 'Parental Controls'.
  4. Click the padlock icon in the bottom left of the window and authenticate your administrator account.
  5. From the left-hand panel select the user account that experienced the warning when logging in.
  6. On the 'Apps' tab locate the 'Allowed Apps' filter and type the word 'sophos' (without quotes) into the field.
  7. Put a check mark next to all of the applications that show a Sophos icon apart from the uninstaller for the application.  See the screenshot below for an example.
  8. Close the System Preferences window.
  9. Test the change by logging off the computer and back on as the account with Parental Controls applied.

Note: In the 'Issue' section, at the start of this article, the warning shown was due to the 'SophosUIServer' application not being checked as an allowed app.  The screenshot above shows the Sophos Anti-Virus and SophosUIServer apps selected.  This configuration will allow a user to open Sophos Anti-Virus and run a scan based on the folders of the hard drive the user is allowed access to.  The setup will also allow a user to force an update on the computer.
