How to change the synchronization value for iOS and Android devices

This article describes how to change the synchronization value by which Android and iOS devices are synchronized with the SMC server, in order to update the device information.

What To Do

Sophos Mobile Control 4.0 or lower:

To change the synchronization value for Android devices:

  1. Log in to the Sophos Mobile Control web console as an administrator
  2. In the section "Command bundles", click "Bundles"
  3. Click the "Plus" button to create a new bundle
  4. Enter a name and a version as necessary, and select the Android versions with which you want use this command bundle
  5. Click the "Plus" button to add new commands
  6. Select the command "setConfiguration"
  7. For the name, use "MaxSyncGap", and for the value, and define the length of time in minutes. Note that if you set time to "0" automatic sync is turned off
  8. Click "Apply" then "Save"
  9. Transfer the newly created command bundle to the Android devices on which you would like to change the sync interval
  10. After successful deployment, the sync interval will have changed to your new settings

To change the synchronization value for iOS devices:

  1. Connect to the Operating System of your SMC server
  2. Execute the "Configuration Wizard"
  3. Stop the SMC service
  4. Skip the database configuration, and click "Next"
  5. Select the checkbox "Configure Exchange Active Sync Proxy", and click "Next"
  6. In the "EAS Proxy Setup" dialog, configure as required and select "Next"
  7. In the field "Device sync interval (in minutes)" enter the required value. This will set the sync interval for iOS devices
  8. Click "Next", then click "Next" again
  9. Start the SMC service
  10. Click "Finish"

Sophos Mobile Control 5.0:

As of Sophos Mobile Control 5.0 the synchronization value can be configured differently. It is now defined via the "Compliance rules" section.
The procedure is the same for all platforms. The steps below show how to change the synchronization value for the "Default" compliance rules. If you have additional compliance rules which are assigned to specific device groups, you have to run through the steps for all compliance rules configurations.

  1. Log in to the Sophos Mobile Control web console as an administrator
  2. Open the "Compliance rules" section
  3. Edit the "Default" compliance rules by clicking on the arrow next to it and pressing "Edit"
  4. To change the synchronization value
    • for Android devices, go to the "Android" tab and configure the "Max. synchronization gap" according to your needs
    • for iOS devices, go to the "iOS" tab and configure the "Max. synchronization gap" according to your needs
    • for Windows Phone 8.1 devices, go to the "Windows Phone" tab and configure the "Max. synchronization gap" according to your needs
  5. Save the changes

After saving the changes the Sophos Mobile Control server will trigger the devices to synchronize according to the values defined in the compliance rules. If you have additional compliance rules, you have to repeat the steps above.
