Unable to scan a mapped drive from a Windows Vista/7/2008/2008R2 computer. The following error is shown run attempting a right-click scan on a mapped drive:

Sophos Anti-Virus could not scan the selected item. Check if the drive is ready or if you have sufficient rights to access the selected item.

When setting up a new scan in Sophos Endpoint Security and Control the mapped drives show a red cross over their drive icon.

The Windows User Access Control (UAC) evaluation gives an incorrect level of authentication for Sophos's on-demand scanner to access the mapped network drives. The scanner is unable to read from the mapped drive and so fails.

This is due to how UAC separates user mappings from the underlying system. Scans of direct UNC shares will succeed.

What To Do

There are three possible workarounds to avoid this problem:
  1. Install anti-virus software on the file server that hosts the mapped drives and perform the scans from there.
  2. Use a Windows XP, Linux or Mac workstation to scan the mapped drives
  3. Disable UAC on a workstation that is to run the scans on the mapped drives.
