Error 0x80071a91 when starting the Sophos PureMessage service

The Sophos PureMessage service is failing to start. The below error code and text are observed when attempting to start this service:

Windows could not start the Sophos PureMessage service on Local Computer.

Error 0x80071a91: Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error.

This issue occurs if the Windows file system transaction log is corrupted.

What To Do

  1. Select 'Start' | 'All Programs' | 'Accessories' | 'Command Prompt'
  2. Right-click and select 'Run as administrator'
  3. Run the below command:

    fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\

    Note: Change c:\ to a different drive if Windows is installed to a non-default location.
  4. Reboot the computer
