Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux installation fails with errors 'cp: cannot create directory...'

When performing a fresh installation of Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux, v7 from read-only media, e.g. CD-ROM or a CIFS/NFS share (using, the installation will fail with this error:

cp: cannot create directory `/mnt///sophos-av/sav-linux/common/engine/en/LC_MESSAGES': Read-only file system
cp: cannot create directory `/mnt///sophos-av/sav-linux/common/engine/ja/LC_MESSAGES': Read-only file system
Unable to load any translations, aborting

Technical background
This issue has arisen following the release of an emergency fix for Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux, v7. This has introduced a new issue. You will only be affected if you perform a fresh installation of the product from read-only media like a CD-ROM or a CIFS/NFS share ( Updates or upgrades are not affected.

Installations from extracted tarball copies of CIDs or of packages created with or from the Installation package on the Sophos web site won't have issues. Computers running Sophos Anti-Virus for Unix v7 are not affected.

What to do

The workaround is to copy the install set to the hard disk or any other media with read/write access, and to run from there.
