PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange: Unable to start Puremessage service: error 0x8002801d or error 0x80090016

Attempts to start the PureMessage service manually result in either of the messages below.

  • Error 0x8002801d library not registered
  • Error 0x80090016: Keyset does not exist

PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange 3.1.x

What to do

  1. Rename the following subfolder:
    Windows 2000/2003/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18
    Windows Vista and above: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18
  2. To S-1-5-18.old
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Restart the PureMessage service.
