The SafeGuard Enterprise boot stops with a Page Fault message at POA level

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SafeGuard Device Encryption

Operating systems
All supported Operating Systems

What To Do

The SafeGuard Enterprise Power on Authentication (POA) is based on FreeBSD. If during the booting up of this micro operating system, it stops with a so-called Null Pointer reference (which means that an error has occurred during the start phase), a 'Page Fault' message is displayed and the system is halted.

Typically the start of the POA stops because the hardware enumeration of the installed internal devices by the FreeBSD encounters an error. To get round this type of issue, use the hot keys integrated in the POA to change the hardware handling during the FreeBSD startup.

To solve a Page Fault at POA level do the following:

  1. Try all available hot keys at POA. Details of these are given in the knowledgebase article Hotkeys and the POA .
  2. Unplug all USB devices from the computer. If the computer is a Notebook, remove it from the docking station if it is plugged into one.
  3. Check with the computer manufacturer/vendor if a BIOS update is available and apply that, if necessary.

The above steps should solve the 'Page Fault' error. However, if the issue still persists then please contact Sophos Technical Support.

If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support.
