How to encrypt a file within the SGPortable using an existing key while the dialog does not offer any keys via "Set Encryption Key...".

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SafeGuard Data Exchange

Operating systems
All supported operating systems

What To Do

In SafeGuard Enterprise, it is not possible to create a key twice. Every key has the date and the time as part of its name, which prevents the key from being recreated.

The main reason for using SafeGuard Portable is to let users access and edit encrypted files.

However, it is possible to encrypt files on a USB medium with an existing key. To do this, please do the following:

  1. Open one of the files that is already on the USB stick and enter the passphrase. The key is now active in SGPortable.
  2. Right-click on a existing file and select 'Encrypt', the file will then be encrypted with the "current active" key i.e key in step 1.

Please note: When closing SGPortable, the file is not decrypted whereas a decrypted file will always be encrypted upon closing.
