This article outlines the Microsoft SQL licensing requirements that may apply to your installation of SafeGuard Enterprise.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SafeGuard Management Center / Local Policy Editor

What To Do

The Microsoft Corporation offers several different options for licensing their products such as the SQL server.

SafeGuard Enterprise stores all the information that is required to run the product within a SQL database.

If SQL Server Express is used, no licenses need to be purchased. SQL Server Express is free of charge and can be used for a SafeGuard Enterprise installation without any concerns.

For technical limitations please contact Microsoft directly (such as maximum size of a database or maximum number of connections to the server).

Every other SQL installation will be charged in one of two different ways. Microsoft offers two options, either to license per Processor or per Server+Device CAL.

  • If the SQL server is already licensed per Processor nothing extra has to be purchased.
  • If the SQL server is licensed per Server+Device CAL a CAL license is needed for each computer that directly communicates with the SQL Server.

In the case of a SafeGuard Enterprise installation, this would mean one CAL license for each SGN Management Center admin workstation, one for each SGN Server and one for each SGN client. For more information, refer to Microsoft’s multiplexing information (opens a MS Word .docx file).

Detailed information regarding buying and licensing Microsoft products can be found on the Microsoft web page or should be available from your local vendor.
