The very nature of security protection necessitates ongoing updating of endpoint products to ensure Sophos's customers benefit from the best protection available against an ever changing threat landscape. We encourage you to implement the latest product version available to ensure you benefit from the best protection.

This article describes Sophos's Endpoint lifecycle policy as it applies to all Endpoint software.

Applies to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
Sophos Endpoint Security and Control

Understanding product version numbering

Product version numbering uses a convention of major.minor.maintenance for versioning. For example, in the A.B.C numbering convention A is a major release number, B is a minor update and C is a maintenance update.

Examples of major, minor, maintenance updates using previous releases of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows are shown below.

  • A - From v9.7 to v10.x - major upgrade delivering new v10 features including patch assessment, web control and full disk encryption.
  • B - From v10.0.x to v10.2.x - minor update that included support for Windows 8 but did not need a console upgrade and was not deployed to endpoints automatically.
  • C - From v10.2.4 to v10.2.5 - maintenance update containing maintenance fixes, new engine and/or data. These maintenance releases do not contain new features and are typically monthly but timing is at the discretion of Sophos.

Phases of Endpoint product lifecycle policy

The Endpoint lifecycle policy applies to all Endpoint software. A product lifecycle consists of three phases:

1 Standard support This active maintenance period means that Sophos will actively investigate and address issues found in the field where it is appropriate to address them in a maintenance release. Maintenance releases are minor releases and do not normally contain additional features, but may ask for a reboot for the endpoint to benefit from the latest protection
2 Limited support This extended maintenance period means that Sophos will continue to test and release new versions of the Virus Engine and/or Virus Data Library as part of the release calendar. Only critical product issues will be addressed during this stage, these can include hotfixes, vulnerabilities or improvements to protection at Sophos’s discretion.
3 Not supported In this phase Sophos will cease providing any Standard Support and any Limited Support. At Sophos’s discretion there may be ongoing data releases providing a “ramp down” until the product is no longer updated but this is not guaranteed. Our recommendation is that you upgrade your systems to use products that are in Standard Support.

Visual overview of our end of life timeline

  1. New product version (vA+1) is made generally available.
  2. EoL process starts for previous version (A).

Sophos Enterprise Console

Sophos periodically releases new versions of the Sophos Enterprise Console. Any urgent hotfixes, vulnerabilities or improvements to protection will be applied to supported versions at Sophos’s discretion.

To take advantage of new functionality you will need to upgrade to the latest console. As soon as you do this you will be able to start using the new features. To ensure you benefit from best protection Sophos encourages you to install the latest version of Sophos Enterprise Console.

The retirement schedule for Sophos Enterprise Console is published in article 119147.

Platform Support

Sophos publishes a list of supported platform information for endpoint product versions is available in article 113278.

General Policy for Endpoint Platform Support

  • Sophos will typically support Windows operating system versions beyond the Microsoft end of life dates for at least 12 months.
  • Sophos will only support the latest and previous Service Packs.

As an example Microsoft end of life for Windows XP is 8th April 2014. Sophos will be supporting Windows XP until at least end September 2015.

  • Sophos will typically support the current OS X version and the previous OS X version provided both versions are under Full Apple support, we may choose to offer limited support on older versions of OS X where they have been in the field for a prolonged period of time.
  • When a new Operating System version is released Sophos will support the previous version for a minimum of 12 months from date of release of the new version.

As an example if OSX 11 were to be released in October 2014, Sophos would plan to support the previous OS X version (10.9) from October 2014 until the next version of OS X was released. Sometimes we will support more than two versions, article 119018 should be consulted for specific details..

  • Sophos will typically support the current Operating System version and the previous Operating System version, provided both versions are under full vendor support.
  • When a new Operating System version is released Sophos will support the previous version for 12 months from date of release of the new version.

As an example Ubuntu 14.04 is released in April 2014 after which Sophos will support 10.04 until April 2015, there after Sophos will support 12.04 and 14.04 until a new version is released.

Platform Retirement

When Sophos retires a platform, the information is published in advance of retirement in article 119016.

Platform Retirement is when all urgent software fixes, protection updates and support will end. The date shown is the last date for support. Generally there will be no software changes made in the preceding three months. For example, a retirement date of 30 June 2014 will have the last software update in late March / early April 2014. Protection updates (i.e. IDE files) will continue to be provided until 30 June 2014.
