Enterprise Console shows the error: Failed to open Connection. 0x80040603

The following error appears while the Enterprise Console is running:

Failed to open connection.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
Sophos Control Center
Enterprise Console


  • The error is transient and due to the console being left open for a long period of time.
  • The database has become partially corrupt.
  • The Local System account does not have the required permission level to access the SQL Server.

What to do

Restart the Sophos Management/ SQL server services

  1. Close any Enterprise Consoles that may be open, including remote consoles.
  2. Open Windows services (Start | Run | Type: services.msc).
  3. Stop the Sophos Management service.
  4. Restart the SQLServer(SOPHOS) service. NOTE: "(SOPHOS)" refers to the SQL named instance that houses the SOPHOSx database. Please check with your database administrator for the correct service.
  5. Start the Sophos Management service.
  6. Re-launch Enterprise Console.

If the management service fails to start the there is a problem connecting to the database, if this is the case troubleshoot that problem.

If the issue is not resolved continue below.

Check for database corruption (Sophos4 only, does not exist in Sophos45 or Sophos47)

  1. Open comand prompt (Start | Run | Type: cmd | Press return).
  2. Run one of the following commands based on your console version:
    Enterprise Console version 4:      osql -E -S .\SOPHOS -d sophos4 -Q "exec CheckIntegrity"
