This hands-on workshop provides a high-level technical understanding of the Sophos UTM 9.x modules. Learn about the components and the UTM Manager; focusing particularly on policies, system configuration and operational management, along with basic troubleshooting.

This course is designed for anyone who has had exposure to Sophos UTM and wishes to increase their technical understanding of the product to a higher level.

The Sophos UTM Workshop training equips you with the skills and knowledge to configure and maintain the Sophos UTM for everyday operation in network environments with low to medium complexity.

Objectives

On completion of this course, trainees will be able to:

  • Recognize the main technical capabilities of the UTM 9.x Firewall and how they protect against threats
  • Identify the UTM solution components and understand how they interact
  • Complete common configuration and policy creation tasks
  • Manage security events
  • Backup and restore the system
  • View, manage and interpret logs and reports
  • Perform basic troubleshooting
  • Centrally manage and monitor UTM devices via the Sophos UTM Manger

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisite for this course, however it is recommended that students should:

  • Have Networking knowledge to CompTIA Network+ or better
  • Be familiar with security best practices
  • Be able to setup a Windows sever
  • Have experience of configuring and managing network gateway devices
  • Have knowledge of general windows networking and Microsoft Active Directory

Certification

This course does not provide a certification level. However, a certificate of attendance will be issued.

Lab environment

Each student will be provided with a pre-configured environment which simulates a company network.

Agenda

  • UTM architecture overview, configuration and installation wizards
  • The WebAdmin interface, dashboards, functions and shortcuts
  • Setting up a basic system configuration, dealing with licenses, system settings, Up2Date service, NTP configuration backup, notification and logging
  • Configure the network settings such as ports, DNS, DHCP and static routing. In addition, definition of network objects, services and scheduled events
  • Network security using Network Address Translation (NAT) and packet filtering
  • Locking content to users, monitoring of URLs and blocking of suspicious Internet traffic and providing audit functions
  • Protecting businesses against spam and malicious code using the functions of e-mail security
  • Configuration and rollout of an IPSec-based site-to-site VPN and remote access via SSL, PPTP or IPSec-based VPN
  • Efficient systems management with support tools, SNMP, remote syslog, reports, and Central Management (UTM Sophos CC)
