Using the Terminal to install or remove Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X

This article is only intended for Mac administrators who need to remove the program from a lot of Macs.  If you need to remove the program from one or two computers see article 120838 for steps using the graphical (and much easier) removal program.

What To Do

All the instructions below are entered in Terminal.  To open Terminal search for it in Spotlight.  

Example:

 

Select the instructions based on the version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X you have installed (article 112457 explains how to check the version):

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X version 9.2+

Note: If installing via Apple Remote Desktop with UNIX commands, the command needs to be altered slightly sudo "./Sophos\ Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/InstallationDeployer" --install

Installation via the Terminal - v9.2+ installation managed by Enterprise Console or Sophos Cloud

On the Mac endpoint computer:

  1. For Enterprise Console: Copy the 'Sophos Installer.app' installer file and the 'Sophos Installer Components' directory to a preferred location (e.g., the Desktop).
    For Cloud: Extract the contents of the installer .zip file you downloaded from Cloud to a preferred locations (e.g., the desktop).
  2. Open Terminal and change the directory to the one containing the installer.  Example:
    cd /Users/<yourUsername>/Desktop/
  3. Run the following command:
    sudo "./Sophos Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/InstallationDeployer" --install 

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.  The password will not appear on screen - press enter when you have entered it.

Installation via the Terminal - v9.2+ standalone installation

  1. Copy the installer file to a preferred location (e.g., the Desktop).  In some cases a 'Sophos Installer Components' directory will exist alongside the 'Sophos Installer.app'.  If this directory exists it should be copied alongside the installer.
  2. Open Terminal and change the directory to the one containing the installer.  Example:
    cd /Users/<yourUsername>/Desktop/
  3. Run the following command:
    sudo "./Sophos Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/InstallationDeployer" --install

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.  The password will not appear on screen - press enter when you have entered it.

Removal via the Terminal - v9.2+ installation managed by Enterprise Console

  1. Open Terminal and run the following command:
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/Sophos/opm/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/
  2. Run the following command:
    sudo ./InstallationDeployer --remove

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.  The password will not appear on screen - press enter when you have entered it.

Removal via the Termina - v9.2+ installation managed by Sophos Cloud

  1. Open Terminal and run the following command:
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/Sophos/cloud/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/
  2. Run the following command:
    sudo ./InstallationDeployer --remove --tamper_password <pw>

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights. The password will not appear on screen - press enter when you have entered it.

    <pw> is your tamper protection password, which can be found in the device information on Sophos Cloud (https://cloud.sophos.com)

Removal via the Terminal - v9.2+ standalone installation

  1. Open Terminal and run the following command:
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/Sophos/opm-sa/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/tools/
  2. Run the following command:
    sudo ./InstallationDeployer --remove

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.  The password will not appear on screen - press enter when you have entered it.
