Configuring your FTP client to connect to Sophos' FTP server

When contacting us about a technical issue you may need to send us one or more files that are too large to email.  For files 30MB and lower you can use our support request form on the Contact Support page - remember to enter an existing case reference into the form (if you have one) and it'll get to the right person.

For files larger than 30MB you should send them to us by File Transfer Protocol (ftp).  There are two ways of doing this:

  • Use an ftp program on your computer to connect to our ftp server.
  • Use the inbuilt Windows ftp program (with is a non-graphical command prompt program).

Before you begin

In order to use the FTP site, you will need:

  • An FTP Client. The Sophos FTP has been tested with several FTP clients. The instructions below show how to configure FileZilla client ( to connect to Sophos' FTP.  FileZilla is an Open Source program and is free to use.

  • Credentials supplied by us. Contact Support if you do not have credentials. The credentials will be sent to you as an encrypted email using Sophos SPX Encryption.

Preparing files for upload

We strongly advise that all files uploaded to the Sophos FTP site be archived using the highest compression options available to minimize transfer times and/or problem. We recommend using 7-zip to create these archives, it is available on many different platforms, is Open Source, and is free to use.

Archiving files you intend to upload to the Sophos FTP has a number of benefits:

  • The time to upload the archive will often be shorter than in their original state.
  • The time for Sophos to download the file will also be shorter.
  • A reduced upload size also means less chance of an upload failure.
  • Archives can be easily password protected for added security.

Settings required

FTP client

The following details are required to configure an FTP Client to connect to Sophos' FTP. 

  • Host:
  • Port: 990
  • Protocol: FTP over explicit TLS/SSL
  • Authentication is required, no anonymous access is allowed.

Use the following settings if you are not able to connect to the secure server.

Note: All data sent and received across the insecure ftp network may be visible to others!

  • Host:
  • Port: 21
  • Protocol: Plain FTP
  • Authentication is required, no anonymous access is allowed.


Firewall requirements (or use FTP proxy if you have one):

  • TCP destination port 990 - outbound.  
  • TCP range of destination ports 5000-5100 - outbound.

Configuring FileZilla to use Sophos' FTP

  1. Open FileZilla and click the icon in the top left corner to open the 'Site Manager':

  2. In the 'Site Manager' dialog window click the 'New Site' button to create a new site:

  3. On the 'General' tab configure the new site with the details shown in the 'Settings required - FTP client' above.  Use the credentials that we have provided to you.

    The example screenshot below uses the secure settings however the 'Settings required - FTP client' section above also lists insecure details if port 990 is not available.

  4. On the 'Transfer Settings' tab ensure that you use either default or passive transfer modes:

  5. Only if you use Sophos UTM: If you already have FileZilla configured to use Sophos UTM's FTP Proxy, 'Bypass Proxy' must be selected on the 'Advanced' tab of 'Site Manager'.
  6. Click the Connect button. You will be warned about a certificate; you can permanently trust the certificate, as shown below:

Upload a file to the FTP server

Once successfully connected (see Troubleshooting a connection problem below for any problems) you need to upload (transfer) the file to our server.

  1. Using FileZilla's file/folder browser locate the folder containing the file you need to upload.  In the example screenshot below a folder called 'aFolder', located at the root (top level) of the computer's hard drive is selected.  Use the plus and minus tree view to navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to upload.

  2. To upload the file drag and drop the file in the selected folder from the left hand panel (representing the local site/computer [1]) to the right hand panel (representing the remote site - our FTP server [2]).

The file will be copied to our FTP server with a progress bar shown at the bottom of the program.

Depending on the file's size and your Internet connection speed the transfer may take a while.  Once uploaded you can select the 'Successful transfers' tab at the bottom of the program to see summary information.

Troubleshooting a connection problem

1. Check the error

If there is a problem connecting to our server check what is recorded in the log, which is shown near the top of the program.  Example of an incorrect username or password:

2. Use the basic connection port

If you have used the secure settings from the section 'Settings required - FTP client' at the beginning of this article consider changing to the insecure settings.  Using the insecure settings allows FileZilla to use port 21 (standard FTP port) instead of 990 - port 990 may not be allowed through your firewall.  Example of insecure settings (red fields show changes needed from that of a secure connection):
