Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X: error disinfecting a file on a Samba share in version 10.4 and above

An error message is displayed on Mac OS X computers running Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X, which has automatic disinfection enabled for on-access scanning, where an infected file is found on a remote Samba share. The file will not be disinfected or removed.

The log file displays the message: Error disinfecting file.

This error, which affects all versions of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X, only affects disinfection on the remote Samba share. It is caused by changes in Mac OS X, not the Sophos product. Sophos Anti-Virus continues to run correctly on the local computer.

What to do

You must disinfect the file on the UNIX server.

Go to the computer that is hosting the Samba share, and disinfect or remove the virus using the Sophos Anti-Virus for UNIX product which is installed on that computer.
