Installation Unsuccessful - Failed to register with the Sophos server

At the end of the Sophos Cloud endpoint installer you see the following error message:

Installation Unsuccessful
Failed to register with the Sophos server.
Please contact your administrator for assistance.

Checking the 'Sophos Endpoint Bootstrap_[Timestamp].txt' log you see the return code of 142 and the error message:

ERROR,There was an unexpected problem with the installation of Sophos Endpoint Security and Control. Details: The MCS endpoint was rejected by the server during registration, the token is invalid.,

Known causes for this issue are as follows:

  • The SophosInstall.exe used to perform the installation is associated to a Sophos Cloud user that has since been deleted.  

    A similar registration error can be seen in the Sophos Management Communications logs after deleting a managed, for more information see article: 120281

  • The computer name, description or username contains one or more characters that invalidates the generated XML by MCSClient.exe.  For more information see article: 120360.
