How to reset Sophos UTM to factory settings

This article explains how to perform a factory reset via the command-line.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
Sophos UTM

The factory reset function resets the device back to the default configuration. The following data will be reset:

  • System configuration
  • Web filter cache
  • Logs and reporting data
  • Databases
  • Update packages
  • Licenses
  • Passwords
  • High availability status

The version number of Sophos UTM software will remain the same, that is, all firmware and pattern updates that have been installed will be retained.

You can either run the factory reset via command-line or within the Sophos UTM.

What To Do

To run the factory reset via command-line, proceed as follows:

  1. Login to the UTM console or via SSH as loginuser.
  2. Enter su to login as root.
  3. Enter: cc
  4. Enter: RAW
  5. Enter: system_factory_reset

The system will automatically shutdown when it's finished.

Note: steps 3-5 can also be performed via a single command: cc system_factory_reset

Factory Reset Within UTM

You can also run a factory reset for your UTM via the WebAdmin. Proceed as follows:

  1. Login to the UTM WebAdmin.
  2. Browse to Management > System Settings > Reset Configurations or Passwords, then click 'Run factory reset now'.

The Sophos UTM will shut down after the factory reset is complete.
