When you upgrade your operating system from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04+ the mechanism used to start services changes.

Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux can use the new mechanism (upstart), however it will not automatically change to using upstart if it was originally installed on an older operating system that was using SysV (older mechanism).

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux,

Operating systems
Upgrades from Ubuntu version 8.04 to version 10.04+

What To Do

Following this operating system upgrade, Sophos Anti-Virus must be switched to using 'upstart' rather than 'SysV'

To do this you must uninstall and then re-install Sophos Anti-Virus. This can be done using the following script:

cp -a $INST/update/cache/Primary /tmp/SAV-cache
cp -a $INST/etc/savd.cfg /tmp/SAV-savd.cfg
$INST/uninstall.sh --force
/tmp/SAV-cache/install.sh --automatic --acceptlicence $INST
stop sav-protect
cp -a /tmp/SAV-savd.cfg $INST/etc/savd.cfg
start sav-protect
