Sophos Press Release

Virus Bulletin confirms Sophos's "top notch" detection rates on Ubuntu

Sophos Anti-Virus has won the VB100 award again

Sophos, a world leader in IT security and control, today announced that Sophos Anti-Virus has been awarded the accolade of VB100 in the June 2008 edition of Virus Bulletin magazine. This is the 41st time that Sophos Anti-Virus has won a prestigious VB100 award, confirming its ability to detect 100% of the viruses in the wild, and its position as one of the most powerful virus protection products available.

Virus Bulletin tested 15 different anti-virus products for their detection rates, lack of false alarms, and speed of scanning on Ubuntu Linux 8.04LTS Server Edition. Sophos successfully detected all of the in-the-wild viruses (as well as identifying 100% of the file, polymorphic, worms and legacy malware) with no false alarms, outperforming a number of other vendors including Kaspersky and F-Secure.

In-the-wild: 100.00%
In-the-wild (on-access): 100.00%
Worms and bots: 100.00%
File infector: 100.00%
Polymorphic: 100.00%
Legacy: 100.00%
False positives: 0

"Congratulations to Sophos for achieving its 41st VB100 award," said John Hawes, technical consultant at Virus Bulletin. "Sophos installed easily on the Ubuntu platform compared to some other products, and demonstrated excellent scanning speeds in our tests. Its detection rates were top-notch, and 100% protection against Virus Bulletin's in-the-wild virus collection without any false positives meant it was a worthy recipient of another VB100 award."

All Sophos products use the same technology to protect against viruses, worms, spyware, Trojan horses and other malware, ensuring consistently high detection rates across all operating systems.

About the Virus Bulletin 100% award

The Virus Bulletin 100% awards recognise those products best able to detect viruses known to be 'in the wild'. Unlike some other similar-sounding schemes, Virus Bulletin uses the most up-to-date WildList in its tests. This means that products that are 'up with the game' are the ones most likely to be granted VB100 awards. More information about Virus Bulletin can be found on its website:
