Customers gain advanced protection with integration of Sophos's
Genotype™ technology in Secure Computing's Application
Defenses™
Lynnfield, MA/San Jose, CA - Sophos, a global leader in network
security and Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ: SCUR), the
experts in securing connections between people, applications, and
networks, announced today that Sophos's virus scanning technology
will be added to the Sidewinder G2® Security Appliance.
The integration of the two companies' best-of-breed security
products further strengthens Secure Computing's Sidewinder G2
Unified Threat Management (UTM) offering.
The integration gives enterprise customers a high level of
integrated protection from the latest internet security threats by
combining proactive technologies from the two companies, Sophos's
Genotype technology and Secure Computing's Application Defenses™
firewall. Sophos is the latest solution to be integrated into
Secure's industry leading centrally managed line of Sidewinder G2
security appliances. The line up of capabilities delivered by
Sidewinder "all in one" security appliances are becoming increasing
popular in the SMB (small to medium business) market.
"Traditional firewalls are rapidly evolving into Unified Threat
Management (UTM) security appliances, and the heart of UTM is the
unification of a firewall, IPS, and anti-virus on a single
platform," said Charles Kolodgy, Research Director for Security
Products at IDC. "So a partnership with Sophos and Secure Computing
to provide UTM functionality is a natural, and leaves both
companies well-positioned for growth in this burgeoning market,
which we project to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 80%
between 2004 and 2008, which will translate into a total market of
$2 billion."
The Sidewinder G2 Security Appliance's centrally managed
capabilities include an Application Defenses firewall with embedded
anti-virus, anti-spam, traffic anomaly detection, IDS/IPS, and a
whole host of other critical protective features described
below.
Tightly integrating Sophos's virus scanning technology into the
Sidewinder G2 appliance strengthens Secure Computing's offering in
numerous key ways.
-
Consolidated malware protection
The Sophos detection engine provides integrated
detection and disinfection of viruses, Trojans, worms and
spyware.
-
Rapid threat protection
SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus and
spam analysis centers, delivers historically shorter time gaps
(compared with the other leading anti-virus providers) between when
a new threat appears on the internet, and when virus identity files
(IDEs) are built and distributed to the customer.
-
Genotype detection technology
Genotype detection is an advanced method of using
forensic analysis to identify suspicious patterns and
characteristics that are unique to a virus family. By analyzing
Genotype patterns, Sophos reduces exposure to new unidentifiable
threats and unwanted content.
-
Frequent virus updates
Sophos provides frequent updates, ensuring that
customers are up-to-date at all times.
-
Smaller virus identity file transfers
Sophos's IDEs are smaller than 5KB and are
significantly smaller than competing solutions. This eliminates
bottlenecks in enterprises with many international sites and with
SMB customers where internet bandwidth is severely limited.
"We selected Sophos because we wanted our customers to have the
most advanced, accurate and up-to-date virus protection available,"
said Mike Gallagher, Senior Vice President of Product Development
for Secure Computing. "We will continue to seek out best-of-breed
providers of security software for our Sidewinder G2 so that we can
provide our customers the low cost of ownership they seek in a UTM
appliance without forcing them to abandon their desire for
best-of-breed protections.
"With SophosLabs analyzing and protecting against more than 300
new malicious software programs each week, safeguarding an
organization against computer threats is vital," said Richard
Baldry, Head of Strategic Alliances at Sophos. "Secure Computing's
Application Defense strategy sits seamlessly with Sophos's virus
scanning technology, providing our joint customers with
award-winning threat protection."
Pricing and availability
The Sidewinder G2 Security Appliance is offered in eight
appliance models ranging from $1,500 to $70,000, depending upon
configuration. Sophos's virus scanning technology is available
immediately on all models.
