We are seeking a Benefits Manager with 5-7 years’ experience with health and welfare benefit programs. This is a contract role that will be sit in our Fairfax, Virginia office.

Main Duties

  • Resolve benefits inquiries or issues received from employees.  Review, assess and provide guidance and direction to resolve within benefit program parameters.  Interpret and applies benefits plans to resolve individual benefits claims
  • Analyze Company health & welfare benefits programs and policies, government regulations affecting benefits, competitive trends in benefits in order to comply with legal requirements and to establish competitive benefits designed to attract, retain, and motivate employees.
  • Acts as an expert resource, managing health & welfare benefit delivery and providing advice on benefit practice, integration issues (e.g. mergers and acquisitions) within own area and across the wider HR community
  • Facilitate regular and ad hoc reporting and analysis of employee benefits and wellness programs, including, but not limited to, utilization, claims experience, financial analysis and projections.
  • Maintain awareness and compliance with COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, and FMLA regulations.  Share knowledge and collaborate to provide functional support and ensure continuity of services.
  • Evaluate and compare existing company benefits with those of other employers by analyzing other plans, surveys and other sources of information. Plan, develop and/or participate in area and industry surveys. Analyze results of surveys and develop specific recommendations for review by management.
  • Oversee the communication of the company’s benefit plans and programs.
  • Provide defined metrics for measuring effectiveness of HR programs in driving organizational performance and containing costs.
  • Maintain knowledge of local HR laws and regulations
  • Supports in the communication of health & welfare benefit programs both within and outside the HR team
  • Work across the HR function and business, align benefit program delivery with wider HR and business objectives, ensuring interventions are integrated in a consistent way that supports Sophos’s organizational objectives
  • Leads projects, track and reports key metric; and oversees facilitates program compliance matters

Experience and Skills


  • 5-7 years’ experience with health and welfare benefit programs
  • Experience with benefits plan compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and operate with discretion
  • Knowledge of applicable benefit laws (COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, ACA, and FMLA) and compliance and reporting requirements
  • Ability to successfully work across all levels of the organization


  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and influence outside vendors and internal clients
  • Organizational and project management skills Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), or other HR certification desirable but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and influence outside vendors and internal clients
  • Bachelor’s degree
