Action

Please follow the instructions for removing worms.

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entry for each user who ran the virus. The removal of this entry is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export Range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS\[code number indicating user]\. For each user locate the entry:

HKCU\[code number]\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\
RUN = "C:\\WINDOWS\\Rundllw32.exe"

and delete it if it exists.

Close the registry editor.

Editing Win.ini

At the taskbar, click Start|Run and type Sysedit. Bring Win.ini to the front. In the [windows] section, search for a line beginning with 'Run=' and delete any references to the files you removed. Delete only that reference, not any other text.

Reboot your computer.

More Information

W32/Gift-B is a mass mailing worm.

When it is executed the first time, it will display a fake error message of:
"File data corrupt:
probably due to bad data transmission or bad disk access."

And then make a copy of itself in /windows/Rundllw32.exe and create the start registry entry:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\
RUN = "C:\\WINDOWS\\Rundllw32.exe"

It will also set the related run key in WIN.INI in older windows versions.

When the worm is executed on startup, it will scan for email addresses from .ht* and *.asp files from My Documents and the current folder.

It is capable of sending following emails through MAPI. Following is a few example of the large list of email it sends (note that this list might be modified in different versions):

Subject: Improve your site
Attachment: js.exe
Message: Your page is nice. Test this js scripts
and tell me what do you think.

Subject: <null>
Attachment: Setup.exe
Message: Hello, Take a look to this little app!

Subject: IE5 security patch
Attachment: Ie5Patch.exe
Message: This is the security patch you asked for...
i don't know if is the last version but works.

On the 5th of every month, it will display a message box with message:

I-Worm.RunDllw32 Activated
This is a I-Worm coded by Bumblebee\29a!
Gretingz to all 29a members ;)
