Action

Please follow the instructions for removing Trojans.

Replace the Hosts file from a backup or edit it in Notepad to remove the changes that the Trojan has made.

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

In Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 you will also need to edit the following registry entries. The removal of these entries is optional in Windows 95/98/Me. Please read the warning about editing the registry.

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

and remove any reference to any file you deleted.

Each user has a registry area named HKEY_USERS\[code number indicating user]\. For each user locate the entry:

HKU\[code number]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run\

and remove any reference to any file you deleted.

Close the registry editor.

More Information

Troj/BagleDl-L is a Trojan downloader which attempts to download and execute a file from several listed remote websites.

When first run the Trojan copies itself to the Windows system folder as winshost.exe and drops a component wiwshost.exe also into the Windows system folder. The dropped component is then loaded and executed. The following registry entries are also created by the Trojan so as to auto-start on computer reboot:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
winshost.exe
%SYSTEM%\winshost.exe

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
winshost.exe
%SYSTEM%\winshost.exe

The Trojan will attempt to terminate various anti-virus and security related processes while trying to download components from remote websites into %WINDOWS%\_re_file.exe. It will also rename a predefined list of files.

The Trojan attempts to terminate and disable various anti-virus and security-
related programs and modifies the HOSTS file located at %WINDOWS%\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS, mapping selected anti-virus websites to the loopback address 127.0.0.1 in an attempt to prevent access to these sites.
