The original version triggers between 1st October and 31st December 1988. The formatting version triggers between 1st October and 31st December in any year except 1993.
When triggered, the original version causes characters to 'fall' from the screen, while the formatting version formats sector zero of the hard disk.
The 'falling characters' payload of the original Cascade virus is perhaps one of the most well known of virus side-effects.
