Solution

MS09-067

Vendor description This security update resolves several privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited any of these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
SophosLabs comments

This update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Excel for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms. Users who open specially crafted Excel files using vulnerable versions of Microsoft Excel, could end up executing arbitrary code at their current privilege level.

Although SophosLabs have yet to encounter any examples of malware exploiting this vulnerability, because of the exposure of the attack vectors related, SophosLabs is assigning this update a threat level of high.

We advise users to apply this patch at their earliest convenience.

SophosLabs testing result Testing was conducted on a 2007 Microsoft Office System with Service Pack 2.
