| Vulnerability name/brief description | MS09-068 - Important Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution |
| CVE/CAN name | |
| Vendor threat level | Important |
| SophosLabs threat level | High |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Word file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. |
| SophosLabs comments | This update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Word for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms. Users who open special crafted Word files using vulnerable versions of Microsoft Word, could end up executing arbitrary code at their current privilege level. Although SophosLabs have yet to encounter any examples of malware exploiting this vulnerability, because of the exposure of the attack vectors related, SophosLabs is assigning this update a threat level of high. We advise users to apply this patch at their earliest convenience. |

| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
