| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | |
| Vendor description | This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Web Services on Devices Application Programming Interface (WSDAPI) on the Windows operating system. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected Windows system receives a specially crafted packet. Only attackers on the local subnet would be able to exploit this vulnerability. |
| SophosLabs comments | This update resolved a remote code execution vulnerability in Window's Web Services on Devices API. Lack of validation in WSDAPI message headers could lead to stack corruption. Attackers exploiting this vulnerability could allow an attacker with network access to take complete control of a vulnerable system. Microsoft have stated that CVE-2009-2512 has not been publicly disclosed , and this has been a contributing factor in assigning the SophosLabs threat level of medium. We advise users to apply this patch at their earliest convenience. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs have not observed any malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary. |
