Solution

MS09-051

Vendor descriptionThis security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Windows Media Runtime. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opened a specially crafted media file or received specially crafted streaming content from a Web site or any application that delivers Web content.
SophosLabs comments

Media file formats are a common target of malware authors due to their increased liklihood of being passed around amongst friends via email or file sharing neworks. The risk to the corporate environment largely depends on the computing practices of employees and the IT restrictions put in place by system administrators but is thought to be lower than that of home users.

Although Microsoft have stated that CVE-2009-0555 has been publically disclosed we are yet to see any examples of attacks through malware, and this has been a contributing factor in assigning the SophosLabs threat level of medium.

We advise users to apply this patch at their earliest convenience.
