| CVE/CAN name | CVE-2009-3103 |
| Vendor threat level | Critical |
| SophosLabs threat level | Medium |
| Solution | Update: Microsoft have released patch MS09-050 to resolve this issue as of 13 October 2009. There is no patch available at this time, as a suggested workaround please refer to Microsoft's instructions on disabling SMB v2 and configuring your firewall to block access to ports 139 and 445. |
| Vendor description | Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a possible vulnerability in Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) implementation. We are not aware of attacks that try to use the reported vulnerabilities or of customer impact at this time. |
| SophosLabs comments | Although this is an unpatched, arbitrary code execution vulnerability we need to keep in mind that it affects a relatively small subset of Windows platforms and vulnerable users can be protected via the published workarounds. We have yet to see any samples although proof-of-concept code is freely available on the Internet. |
| SophosLabs testing result | N/A |
| Currently known exploits | At the time of writing SophosLabs has not seen any samples of malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analysed and we will take action as necessary. |
