MS-ADV-975191 - Vulnerability in Internet Information Services FTP Service Could Allow for Remote Code Execution

CVE/CAN nameCVE-2009-3023, CVE-2009-2521
Vendor threat levelCritical
SophosLabs threat levelHigh
Solution

At the time of writing, a security update was not available from the vendor. However, administrators can implement the following workarounds in an attempt to mitigate damages:
- Limit NTFS file system permissions to disallow directory creation by FTP users (Impact: FTP users will not be able to create directories through the FTP service. FTP users will still be able to upload files to existing directories through the FTP service.)
- Do not allow FTP write access to untrusted anonymous users (Impact: Users will not be able to transfer files using FTP, but can do so using WebDAV.)

Vendor descriptionThe vulnerability could allow remote code execution on affected systems that are running the FTP service and are connected to the Internet. Microsoft is aware that detailed exploit code has been published on the Internet for this vulnerability. Microsoft is not currently aware of active attacks that use this exploit code or of customer impact at this time.
SophosLabs commentsThe vulnerability may result in remote code execution. It can be exploited by a remote FTP user who has been granted write access permissions to the FTP server.  The vulnerability has been assigned a high threat level.
