| Solution | Users are advised to apply the vendor patch for MS09-035 . |
| Vendor description | This security update addresses several privately reported vulnerabilities in the public versions of the Microsoft Active Template Library (ATL) included with Visual Studio. This security update is specifically intended for developers of components and controls. Developers who build and redistribute components and controls using ATL should install the update provided in this bulletin and follow the guidance provided to create, and distribute to their customers, components and controls that are not vulnerable to the vulnerabilities described in this security bulletin. |
| SophosLabs comments | This patch changes the code included in the Active Template Library so that the components developed by Microsoft Visual Studio are not affected by this remote execution vulnerability previously exploited in Microsoft Video Control (msvidctl.dll - see MS09-032) Though initially it was thought that the vulnerability affects only the msvidctl.dll, it has been shown that the vulnerability lies inside the Active Template Library which was used to compile several Microsoft and Third party ActiveX components that are also affected by this vulnerability. It is crucial for all developers that used ATL for development of their components to make sure that their software is not affected. Please visit the Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI) to download and run a scan tool which will show if the components you have developed are vulnerable. Though Microsoft has given this bulletin severity rating Moderate, SophosLabs has given it threat level High as we have seen several exploits indirectly caused by the Active Template Library vulnerability. |
