Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption (SDE): how to create a Helpdesk user

To create a helpdesk user, to be used to issue Response codes when a user forgets their password and other tasks, as desired:

  1. From the Start menu, go to All Programs|Sophos|SafeGuard Disk Encryption|Administration.
  2. Enter the System user (or another user with the right to change account settings) password at the prompt.
  3. In the Administration console, from the Settings tree, select Users.
  4. Click the 'New user' button.
  5. In the New User dialog, type the user name (helpdesk) and then click OK.
  6. In the Adminstration console, under 'helpdesk', click 'Issue abbreviated C/R code' and select Yes.
  7. Click 'Password' and enter and confirm a password.
  8. Then click 'Rights' and open the Rights dialog.
  9. Depending on your needs, you may want to allow the helpdesk user to change general settings, uninstall SDE, and boot from external media in case of emergency. For more information about all of these settings, please see the topic 'User rights' in the SDE help file.
  10. Click the Save button to save your changes and then close the Administration console.
