Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint: file types that are scanned
Issue
This article applies only to Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint version 1.0
Some types of document or file cannot be scanned by Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint. Additional filters or other software may be required.
What to do
Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint v 1.0 uses Windows IFilters to analyse content within common file types. This enables you to search for phrases within those documents.
File types scanned
By default, Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint scans content from the following files based on a combination of file type and extension:
- Plain text (TXT)
- Rich text (RTF)
- HTML
- Microsoft Office (earlier than Office 2007) documents (DOC, DOT, XLS, XLT, POT, PPS, PPT)
- XML
File types not scanned by default and workarounds
You can install the following third-party IFilters without having to make any configuration changes to Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint v. 1.0:
| Filetype which cannot be scanned | Issue | Solution/Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| PDF files | This is an Adobe issue. |
There is currently no actual workaround. |
| Office 2007 documents | Download and install Office 2007 IFilters from Microsoft (recommended) or install Office 2007. (Filetypes: DOCX, DOCM, XLSX, XLSM,XLTX, XLTM, XLSB, PPTX, PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPSX, PPSM) | |
| Excel 2007 binary format files (*.xlsb*) | Download and install Office 2007 IFilters from Microsoft. MS Office alone is insufficient. | |
| Word 2007 templates (*.dotx and *.dotm) | Not scanned for phrases | None |
| WordPerfect (WPD) | Available from Corel |
