CVE/CAN nameCVE-2008-3477 CVE-2008-3471 CVE-2008-4019
Vendor threat levelCritical
SophosLabs threat levelHigh
SolutionUsers are advised to apply the vendor patch for MS08-057 .
Vendor descriptionThis security update resolves three privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
SophosLabs commentsThis vulnerability allows for remote code execution if a user opens a malicious Excel file. Since Excel files were often use to deliver malicious attacks in the past, it is quite likely that the malicious attackers will attempt to exploit these issues.
