Vulnerability name/brief descriptionVulnerability in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (955047) - MS08-055
CVE/CAN nameCVE-2008-3007
Vendor threat levelCritical
SophosLabs threat levelMedium
SolutionUsers are advised to apply the vendor patch for MS08-055 and in the meantime avoid clicking on URLs in OneNote documents of unknown origin.
Vendor descriptionThis security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Office. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user clicks a specially crafted OneNote URL. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
SophosLabs commentsWhile the vulnerability is indeed Critical given it can lead to Remote Code Execution, we have given it a reduced threat level because as well as a patch being available, and the number of samples being seen is low, the vulnerability must also be triggered by the user action of clicking a malformed URL, not simply by opening an exploited document file.

Currently known exploitsThis issue was privately reported to Microsoft. At the time of writing SophosLabs has seen no samples of malware attempting to exploit this vulnerability. Should this situation change samples will be analyzed and we will take action as necessary.
