Sophos Anti-Virus: during deployment you see 'Error 0000002f, Installation involves creating a scheduled task...'

Issue
When deploying Sophos Anti-Virus to a client computer, from either the Enterprise Console or the Sophos Control Center, you receive the error:

Error 0000002f. Installation involves creating a scheduled task on the computer. This requires the Remote Registry service to be running.

Sophos product and version
Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+

Operating system
Windows XP Professional SP2

What to do

  1. Click Start|Run, type services.msc then click OK.
  2. Browse to the Remote Registry Service, right-click on it and select 'Properties'.
  3. Change the 'Startup type' to Automatic, and click 'Apply'. 
  4. Press the 'Start' button, click Apply|OK.
  5. Attempt the deployment again.  It should now install correctly.
