Sophos Anti-Virus: error 709999 when trying to remove third-party software

Issue
You see the following error either in enterprise console, if you have a managed computers, or on a standalone client.

Error 709999. Cancel sophos installation and the removal of the third party installation.

The software that you are trying to remove may include firewall or other components that are not being replaced. Make sure the package that you are installing may include equivalent protection.

SAV for Windows 2000+, 7.3.0

Operating system
Windows XP Professional SP2

What to do

  1. Go to %Temp% and check the avremove.log file. Determine from the name displayed whether the component is:
    • a firewall
    • a product suite
    • update tools 
  2. From the central installation folder to be used (like ESXP),  go to the folder crt and open the Zip file data.zip.
  3. Copy the file crt.cfg to the  crt folder.
  4. Open the file with notepad and enable the removal of the component you identified, by changing the value from ) to 1, e.g.:
    • RemoveFirewalls=1
    • RemoveSuites=1
    • RemoveUpdateTools=1
  5. Save the file and update the CID (without checksumming) then run the installation again.

This time it should be successful.
