PureMessage for UNIX: support for non-English characters
PureMessage supports the use of Western European language characters (that is, characters in the Latin-1 range), as well as the use of several multi-byte Asian language character sets (ja, ko, zh) in many parts of the user interface and in quarantine digest templates. PureMessage also provides limited support for Shift-JIS and EUC-JP character encodings, using the libiconv library to convert from one character encoding to another.
While these provisions allow the use of extended characters in some situations, this should not be confused with full-fledged support for multiple languages. PureMessage is an English language product that offers only limited non-English character support in the following areas:
Users
Latin-1 characters are permitted for the names of users configured via the PureMessage.
policy.siv
Support for non-English characters has been added in the following areas:
- The
policy.sivfile, which was previously restricted to characters in the Latin1 range, can now handle Japanese characters as well. - When using the 'verbatim' setting in the PureMessage Manager's policy editor or when editing
policy.sivdirectly, specified strings can contain Japanese characters for the following policy actions: Replace message part (pmx_replace_body), Add banner (pmx_add_banner), and Notify (pmx_notify). - Japanese characters can be used to specify a 'Reason' for actions in the PureMessage policy editor or the
policy.sivscript. - You can use Japanese characters when specifying text for the Attachment name (
pmx_attachment_name) and Subject (header) policy tests in the PureMessage Manager's policy editor or thepolicy.sivscript. - The suspicious attachments policy test can detect filenames containing Japanese characters.
- Descriptions for rules created via the Policy tab of the PureMessage Manager can contain Latin-1 characters.
- The
pmx_add_bannerpolicy test supports adding banners in multi-byte Asian language character sets.
Anti-Spam Rules
The Desc field on the Anti-Spam Rules page accepts Latin-1 characters. However, the names of anti-spam rules can only contain ASCII characters.
Lists and Maps
Support for non-English characters has been added in the following areas:
- All PureMessage lists are stored as UTF-8 instead of Latin1. However, manual editing of lists or the
lists.conffile must be done in UTF-8 to ensure that the files continue to work as expected. - Address maps (Notifications address map and Recipient aliases map) accept Japanese characters.
Quarantine Management
In addition, double-byte subjects tagged by PureMessage display correctly in a wide range of email clients. Messages displayed on the Manage Quarantine page of the PureMessage Manager are shown with their original encoding. The search fields also support non-ASCII characters. Messages in which Shift-JIS and EUC-JP character set encodings are specified correctly are displayed properly in the PureMessage Manager.
A new option has been added to the Message Source tab. When viewing details for an individual message in a list of quarantine query results, you can click original on the Message Source tab to view the raw source of a message in a new browser window. This option is useful in cases where email messages are not displayed correctly in the PureMessage Manager because they are either incorrectly formatted or use an encoding that PureMessage does not yet support. After clicking original to open the source text in a new browser window, you can change the encoding setting of the browser as a test to help determine if a message is spam or legitimate mail.
Quarantine Digests
The templates used as the basis for quarantine notifications sent to users can contain Latin-1 characters. Also, quarantined messages in certain Asian character sets display properly in digests.
End User Web Interface (EUWI)
The End User Web Interface (EUWI) can be displayed in a number of languages that use Latin-1 characters, and messages in which Shift-JIS and EUC-JP character set encodings are specified correctly are displayed properly in the EUWI. Languages are configured on the Quarantine tab of the PureMessage Manager.
Server Groups
The names and descriptions of groups added and configured via the PureMessage Manager can contain Latin-1 characters.
