Sophos Endpoint Security and Control: 'Shutdown of a process has timed out' is displayed when removing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 on Windows NT 4
Issue
The message 'Shutdown of a process has timed out' is displayed on the computer, causing removal of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 and installation of Sophos software to fail, when using:
- the 'Protect computers' wizard with 'Remove third-party software' selected in Enterprise Console, version 3.1 and above,
- or the Sophos Endpoint Security and Control standalone installer with 'Remove third-party software' selected
to remove Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 on a computer running Windows NT 4.

What to do
On the affected computer, click 'Retry' to continue with the removal of Symantec and installation of Sophos software.
When removing Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 from your computers, ensure that the computers are booted up 15 minutes prior to starting the 'Protect computers' wizard or the standalone installer.
Technical Information
A number of the Symantec processes required to for removal take several minutes to start. The timeout error is displayed when they are not available.
