Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux: kernel update to Ubuntu 7.10 causes crash
Issue
A new kernel was released in February 2008 for Ubuntu 7.10 to deal with the vmsplice vulnerability. However, the name of the kernel (uname -r) was the same as the previous kernel, but it is not compatible with the TBP (Talpa Binary Pack) for that kernel name.
As the TBP is not compatible with the new kernel, you may encounter crashes in the following forms:
- 100% cpu on insmod for talpa_linux.ko
- dead keyboard
- dead network connection
- memory leaking
- machine hanging
Sophos product and version number
Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux, version 6.0 and above
Operating System
Ubuntu 7.10
What to do
Remove the locally compiled TBP (for the previous kernel), which will cause Talpa to recompile its TBP.
- Reboot the machine into Single User mode.
- type:
rm /opt/sophos-av/talpa/compiled/talpa-binpack-ubuntu_2.6.22-14-generic.tar.gz - Reboot the machine.
