Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+: upgrade or installation fails with a white-cross on a red-circle on shield and error in ALC.LOG
Issue
During upgrade or installation of Sophos Anti-Virus, a white-cross on a red-circle appears on the Sophos Shield.
When you check in ALC.LOG the following error message can be seen:
Installation of SAVXP could not continue because of a product with the same function is already installed
NOTE: To view the ALC.LOG:
- In the System Tray (near the Clock) right-click the Sophos Shield
- Select 'Configure Updating'
- Click on the [Logging] tab
- Now click on 'View Updating'

What to do
- Browse to \Windows\Temp\
- Locate the file called 'Sophos Anti-Virus Competitor List.txt'. If you cannot find this file in this location, then run a Windows search for this file.
- Within this text file look for Uninstall Registry Key and Product Name. If you no longer need this product uninstall it from your computer, using 'Add/Remove Programs'.
