Enterprise Console: 'Comparison failure' in anti-virus and HIPS policy

Issue
Enterprise Console 3 shows a 'Comparison failure' in the anti-virus and HIPS policy. Other policies may show the same. This can affect one or more client computers and it may occur after managed computers are upgraded to Sophos Anti-Virus 7.

What to do

This is normally a transient error, and will rectify itself within a fairly short time. You do not need to do anything.

However, if it does not resolve itself, please perform the following steps.

Check the services on the affected client, the 'Sophos Anti-Virus' service remains in a stopping state. You may also see a gray Sophos shield in the system tray.

  1. In Enterprise Console, force the affected clients to comply with the Anti-Virus and HIPS policy by right-clicking the client, selecting 'Comply with - Anti-Virus and HIPS policy'.
  2. In Windows Task Manager, end the SavService.exe process..
  3. Click Start > Run and type services.msc.
  4. Right-click 'Sophos Anti-Virus', selecting 'Start' to start the service.

If you do not have access to the Enterprise Console, and are dealing with a client machine it may be easier to reboot it.
