Enterprise Console: updating to version 3.0, and migrating the console and configuration to a new server
Issue
This article provides instructions for updating Enterprise Console to version 3.0 or above, and then migrating it to a new server, whilst retaining the existing configuration of policies and groups.

What to do
NOTE:
- The target server should be in the same domain as the existing one is/was.
- Ensure that you are running only one Console on the network at a time, otherwise you will experience problems.
Before you start, read the Warning about editing the windows registry.
1. Prepare the new server
Ensure that there are no Sophos components currently installed on the new server before continuing. If there are, do the following:
- Open Add\Remove Programs.
- Remove Sophos Remote Management System.
- Go to Start\Run, type in
regeditand press enter. - Take a backup of your registry.
- Browse to: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos'
- Delete 'Messaging System' if it exists
- Delete 'Remote Management System' if it exists
- Close regedit.
- Browse to: 'C:\Program Files\Sophos' and delete 'Remote Management System' if it exists
- Ensure that the Sophos Message Router service is no longer running:
- Go to Star|Run, type in
services.mscand press enter. - Scroll down to 'Sophos Message Router' if it exists.
- The status column should be blank. If not, right click on 'Sophos Message Router' and select 'Stop'.
- Close the Services window.
- Go to Star|Run, type in
2. Perform the migration and upgrade
- Copy the Certificates
- On the old server, export the registry key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\Certification Manager
- Import this registry key to the new server.
- Copy the Groups and Policies
- Upgrade Enterprise Console on the old server to version 3. This is described in the Network upgrade guide.
- Install Enterprise Console 3 on the new server. This is described in the Network startup guide.
- On the old server, open a command prompt and type the following, including quotation marks:
- cd "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\DB"
- Press Enter, then type
- backupdb sophos3
- Copy the file sophos3 from C:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\DB on the old server to the same location on the new server
- On the new server, open a command prompt and type in the following, including quotation marks:
- cd "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\DB"
- restoredb sophos3
- Open the Enterprise Console on the new server. You should see that all of the groups and policies have now been duplicated onto the new server.
- Edit the updating policies to point to the new server's CIDs
3. Configure Sophos Remote Management System (RMS) on the new server.
For Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows
- Copy
\\NewServer\InterChk\ESXP\mrinit.confto\\NewServer\InterChk\ESXP\RMS\mrinit.conf - Copy
C:\sec30\tools\ConfigCID.exetoC:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\ - Open a Command Prompt and type in the following, including quotation marks:
cd "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console"and press Enter.configcid.exe \\NewServer\InterChk\ESXPand press Enter.
For Windows Endpoint Security and Control 8.0 with SAV
- Copy
\\NewServer\InterChk\SAVSCFXP\mrinit.confto\\NewServer\InterChk\SAVSCFXP\RMS\mrinit.conf - Copy
C:\sec30\tools\ConfigCID.exetoC:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console\ - Open a Command Prompt and type in the following, including quotation marks:
cd "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Enterprise Console"and press Enter.configcid.exe \\NewServer\InterChk\SAVSCFXPand press Enter.
4. Finally you must reprotect ALL of the computers on the network. This will ensure that they look towards your new server.
