Enterprise Console: the database fails to install correctly on a 64-bit version of Windows

The Enterprise Console version 3 and above database can reside on a 64-bit Windows platform. If the database is to run on a 64-bit Windows platform, an existing installation of SQL Server, or SQL Express 2005 Express Edition using a SOPHOS64 database instance must be present on the computer.

Attempting to install Sophos Enterprise Console using the default instance called SOPHOS will fail with the following error:

MSDE server cannot be installed on a 64-bit platform. An existing instance of SQL Server on the local computer must be used

What to do

If you do not have SQL Server installed and wish to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition please follow the steps below.

Please download and install the following files :

Then :

  1. Run SQLEXPR.EXE accept licence agreement (after the system configuration check) :
    1. Click 'Next' twice (on the Registration Information pane)
    2. Untick 'Hide advanced configuration options'
    3. Click 'Next'
    4. Click 'Connectivity Components' and select 'Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive'
    5. Click 'Next'
  2. Under the Instance Name pane, under 'Named Instance' enter SOPHOS64, click Next through the wizard to complete
  3. Run es31sfx.exe, this will detect and use the SOPHOS64 database instance
