Sophos Anti-Virus: how to scan removable devices

Sophos Anti-Virus can scan removable devices, such as a USB drive or memory card.

What to do

Sophos Anti-Virus is able to detect removable devices attached to your computer. When you access a file on a removable device, Sophos Anti-Virus runs an on-access scan in exactly the same way as it does for other files, i.e. subject to the on-access scanning configuration you have set up for your computer.

If you want to run an additional scan when you attach a removable device, use one of the following methods.

  • Perform a right-click scan on the removable device.
    • Open Windows Explorer.
    • From the tree in the left-hand pane, select the device you want to scan.
    • Right-click the selection, and from the menu select 'Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus'.

For more information on right-click scanning, refer to the Sophos Anti-Virus user manual, in the section 'Scanning a single item'

  • Set up an on demand scan, and in the 'Items to scan' panel, select the removable devices you want to scan. For more details of how to do this, refer to the Sophos Anti-Virus user manual, in the section 'Scanning items on demand'.
